About the Cunard Queens - MS Queen Elizabeth

First of all, please note that neither the Queen Victoria nor the current Queen Elizabeth carry the prefix, RMS neither one of them is a Royal Mail Ship since no mail is carried. The prefix, rather is MS for Motor Ship (sort of like SS for Steam Ship)

The Queen Elizabeth was named by HM Queen Elizabeth II shortly before her maiden voyage in 2010. So, she is the youngest ship in the huge fleet of 3 ships.

This photo of the Queen Elizabeth was taken in January, 2012 from the deck of the Crown Princess off Grand Cayman Island. The QE was on the 1st leg of her 2012 World Cruise and we were on Day 3 of a 7
day Western Caribbean cruise on Princess Cruises.

Unlike many cruise lines, the 3 ships of Cunard line have distinctive profiles. And, while the QV and the QE have a similar design the stern (back) of the QE is a bit boxier, allowing Cunard to add more balcony cabins as well as adding extra space on the top deck by the Lido Pool. These extra cabins also allowed the QE as the 2nd largest of the Cunard Queens. The Queen Victoria is now the third largest. The 3 largest Cunard Queens were all built in the 21st century, and era in which bigger is better and more cost effective... at least according to the cruise industry.

Notice also that she is sporting the traditional Cunard livery of red (visible at the water line), a black hull, and a white superstructure as well as the signature black and runnel funnel which is based on the design of the most recent funnel on the now retired QE2.

We embark on Wednesday afternoon, October 16. we have a balcony stateroom - #6151 on Deck 6 on the starboard side of the ship and our stateroom is about 1/2 way from the middle of the ship and the stern. Because of the design of the ship, there are several staterooms like ours with a slightly larger balcony than others in the same category. We will seated a table for 6 in the Britannia Dining Room at the 6:00 pm.seating.

But first, we need to leave Columbus and get to Rome, and that happens Friday night, 10/11 and Saturday morning, 10/12. we will be spending 4 nights in Rome before embarkation. So, I will catch up with all then!
